February 20, 2009: Surprises Make Soccer the Best Sport by Paul Marks, New Scientist Magazine

BASEBALL has home runs, American football has touchdowns and basketball has slam dunks. But when it comes to which is the most exciting sport to follow, soccer takes the gold medal. Eli Ben-Naim, Sidney Redner and Federico Vazquez at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico decided to look at unpredictability of results - how often a team with a worse record overcomes an apparently superior one - as the best measure of how exciting a league is. "If there are no upsets, then every game is predictable and hence boring," says Ben-Naim.
The team analysed results from more than 300,000 games over the last century from the US's national hockey, football, baseball and basketball leagues and the top English football league. Rugby and cricket were omitted because they do not have a big following in the US.Their results showed that the "upset frequency" was highest for soccer, followed by baseball, hockey, basketball and finally American football. But when they looked only at data from the past 10 years, the English football Premiership and baseball swapped places, which suggests that soccer might have become more predictable in recent years.

December 6, 2007

Dear Soccer colleagues,

As you may be aware the Winnipeg Alliance FC does NOT have any CMISL home games, and all expenses are being supported by the owner at this time.

Therefore, we introduced 2 home games; Nov. 11 and Dec. 23 (Nov. 11 was a huge success thanks to WYSA's extremely generous participation) to provide a fund-raising opportunity for the club and also ensure that the local players and WAFC 2007 team focus on being competitive in an environment simulating our future road trips - noisy, exciting and entertaining.

The format for our Sunday Dec. 23 Soccerfest consists as follows:

1315 - 1430hrs: FUNCamp Skill session by WAFC for 5-8yr olds (arranged via Bob Cowie)

1430 - 1515hrs: U of M Women's Bisons -v- PSC/PTC Extreme Select & Invited players

1515 - 1530hrs: U10 Girls competitive game

1530 - 1730hrs: 2 x CMISL games involving Wpg Alliance FC 2007 -v- Wpg All Stars

1730 - 1800hrs: Autograph alley.

Individual tickets for the Soccerfest can be obtained via:

Wpg Alliance FC office - Tel. # 956 2230 and

WYSA office - Tel. # 233 8899.

The entry cost is $10 per ticket.

Please advise me of the number of tickets that you and your organization wish to purchase to support the Wpg Alliance FC.

Thank you in anticipation,

Chic Devenney

GM & Head Coach

Wpg Alliance FC

November 13, 2007: Inner-city students getting their kicks

By Nick Martin - Winnipeg Free Press
LIONEL Pang thought he had a busy life as a school principal and father, but he found out what busy with a capital B was when he suddenly became head of a soccer empire.

The principal of Pinkham School in the North End had an idea last year to get inner-city kids into organized soccer, but he knew most families could not afford hefty registration fees and costly equipment.

Pang started making calls.
That led this spring to the enormously successful inner-city schools outdoor soccer league.
Now there's an indoor inner-city soccer league underway, involving 13 schools, including three that have two teams each.

"We've moved it to the school day -- it's being supported by the (school division) superintendents," Pang said as he got his Pinkham kids ready to bus to the Seven Oaks indoor pitch for a recent match.

The kids have four weeks of soccer this month, and five more weeks in January and February, Pang explained. The Winnipeg Youth Soccer Association (WYSA) is picking up the tab for the field time and some referees' costs, Pang said.

"At Seven Oaks, we have Monday and Wednesday, three slots per day," he said. There is also one evening game each Tuesday and Thursday at Coverall in Headingley.

"The transportation is being provided by the Laura Milner White Foundation, and WYSA," he said. The foundation is in memory of an activist who did extensive volunteer work with inner-city kids.

WYSA executive director Rocky Mougdill is paying for the field time, Pang said.
"The referees are coming out of the Gordon Bell High School leadership program" for day games, Pang said. "Willie Laidlaw (from the Manitoba Soccer Association) went there and did a clinic.

"Evenings at Coverall, Rocky is taking care of that," he said.
Pang said that the superintendents were on board even before he pointed out that indoor soccer fits perfectly into the physical education curriculum. There are 12 teams for grades 4 to 6, four teams of grades 7 and 8 play each other, and schools field mixed teams of both boys and girls.

"I'm trying to suit up the kids with indoor soccer shoes. We'll accept gently used soccer cleats" for both indoor and outdoor soccer, Pang said. "How do you thank Winnipeg? So many people have dropped in with a soccer ball."

There is a drop-off box for donations at the Seven Oaks pitch, he said.
Anyone able to offer equipment or donations can reach Pang at Pinkham School at 786-5749.

October 1, 2007: Ground Broken For New Indoor Soccer Complex

By Paul Turenne: Winnipeg Sun --- After a few years of site changes, studies and one high-profile false start, Winnipeg's soccer community finally breathed a sigh of relief today with the news that construction is underway for a new publicly funded indoor soccer complex. And it's for real this time.

A bulldozer ploughing the ground behind the smiling politicians during a press conference today at the University of Manitoba was evidence enough of that. The $12.5 million facility, paid for by the feds, the province, the city, the U of M and the Winnipeg Soccer Federation, which represents the city's leagues, is going ahead on a piece of land west of University Stadium and south of Victoria General Hospital. It will be ready by next September and owned by the university.

The 105,000 square-foot building will have one continuous pitch of FIFA-approved field turf that can be divided into two or four using curtains. Indoor games will be played without boards. The building will also have a restaurant, lounge, concession stand and pro shop.
